Ti West’s first feature film in six years, this clever and occasionally deep horror film about ambition and aging has a secret weapon: Expert character development.

Since his breakthrough feature House of the Devil, West has made it clear that he moves at his own measured, methodical pace. It’s perhaps the reason some fans don’t particularly care for his slow but steady approach. Yet through careful and economical storytelling, X becomes far more compelling than most horror films of its ilk.

A scene mid-way in the runtime involving all of the main characters sitting in a living room talking and singing is one of the best thanks to the building of the elements.

Make no mistake, however; there’s plentiful gore and nudity (for ALL AGES, it turns out!).
