Tony (2009)

If I ever find myself under investigation, my alibi will now and forever be: I was watching Hider in the House with Gary Busey.

An abstract, grim character study about a lonely man. We’ve seen this character before (the mustache/big glasses look is a serial killer mainstay), yet Peter Ferdinando’s Tony, constantly quoting action movies and making awkward situations even more uncomfortable, also longs for connection. ANY connection, so his feeble attempts at chatting up strangers feels unique amongst the glut of loner killers on the loose flicks. Even when he’s keeping a rotting corpse in bed with him or trying to haggle a cuddle out of a prostitute, you know he wants more.

It doesn’t delve deep into the why’s of Tony. He just is who he is. One thing that always annoys the piss outta me is how most movies depict serial killers as independently wealthy or, barring that, we never get to see how they make money and can afford to just wander around and stalk their victims. Tony admirably addresses this and even makes it a plot point.

The other lesson to be gleaned is this: Never dismember a body while wearing a white button down! You’re just asking for trouble.
