Michele Soavi never met a camera trick he wouldn’t try. The dude even does a nose-cam.Whether you take this macabre, spiritual sequel to Soavi's previous The Church as a disjointed Rosemary's Baby riff with some Manson Family lore sprinkled in or a methodical Turn of the Screw-style mind game played by a Satanic death cult is going to come down to personal preference. There has never been a filmmaker quite like Soavi in his early days, even when Argento was obviously a major influence and he keeps things nice and mysterious.
Only thing missing is when Burial Ground's Mariangela Giordano picks up a cloth that had previously covered a dead man’s face, she didn’t say: “This cloth smells of death.”
That would’ve brought the house down.
