I don't take much issue with the film itself, but the behind-the-scenes details and eventual Oscar wins rubbed me the wrong way.
The Revenant is effective in the way it envelops you into a time and place which isn't often visualized with this much grit and ugliness. I wasn't happy to read about the many issues which plagued the production as well as the apparent mistreatment of some crew members. The fact that Inarritu has taken nearly seven years to direct another feature speaks volumes about how much this film took out of him since a back-to-back Best Director Oscar win would likely allow him to write his own ticket in Hollywood. As a narrative, it manages to have a plot that should be refreshingly simple, yet I longed for a more complex, less elliptical storyline. I'm glad Spotlight won Best Picture. I can see why people might've thought this had a chance, but it's too slight and alienating.
DiCaprio's Oscar win was also just silly. Yes, it was a make-up award for a career which I have deep respect for, considering he rarely bombs at the box office and picks his projects very carefully, but the whole "eating meat" thing and the fact that he doesn't even speak much smacks of your classic "disability" Oscar win, or what RDJ talked about in Tropic Thunder. You never go full...well, you know.
