The Manster (1959)

"Geisha Party!" On "The Movies That Made Me" podcast, the great Joe Dante wondered why all of the good movies were being remade. Why not remake the bad ones that had a good idea but were scuttled due to various reasons (production code restrictions, budget, studio interference, etc.)? Sometimes I tend to be more lenient toward a film that's essentially crummy but has the germ of a great concept. The Brain That Wouldn't Die and The Corpse Grinders come to mind.

The Manster is by no means a good film, yet the conceit of a man experiencing both body horrors and an existential crisis held my interest for most of its relatively swift 73 minutes. The Japanese location shoot also lends a level of authenticity which bolsters the obviously low-fi production.

There's some shoddy acting, particularly from Jane Hylton, whose first scene make her appear to be completely insane. Everyone is constantly drunk "you know where the bar is!" and there's an epic battle while a random-ass volcano is erupting. As Drax would say: Metaphor.
