The Batman (2022)

There’s a lot to say because there’s a lot of movie here, but I don’t want to drone on.

It works best as a mystery-thriller. Finding out what The Riddler’s motives are is genuinely intriguing. Matt Reeves is a good and competent filmmaker and I was impressed by the Riddler conceptually, considering he’s always been a tricky villain to nail down.

The lengthy runtime begs the question of how it might’ve played out had the film focused solely on The Riddler plot and excised Catwoman and The Penguin (amusingly played by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell). The casting of Farrell is also a bit odd since it begs the question: Why completely alter a famous actor’s appearance beyond recognition when there are many fine character actors who would’ve done a great job? Bill Camp comes to mind.

I can imagine a tight 90+ film without all of the extraneous characters, but it’s still an entertaining watch.
