“I’m a brain surgeon, not a vampire hunter.”
This one goes full-Alien 3 and kills off almost everybody from the previous entry in order to wipe the slate clean and focus on the Radu/Michelle relationship. There’s a great deal to like here: the double dealings and power struggles among the vampire ranks, a vampiric scientist who’s managed to transform into a daywalker, a daring and very unexpected turning of the tables on Radu…And yet, the story feels messy and disjointed. Character motivations are murky, the chronology of this and the Vampire Journals spinoff contradict themselves (how did Zachary get the sword in the other film?), and Anders Hove, no offense intended, looks far older despite there only being a five-year gap between the last sequel. Would’ve been better to uglify him and blame it on his violent and messy denouement from the last film. Nicolaou still guides the proceedings with intelligence and some wit, but it’s among the weaker entries in the series.
