Mosquito (1994)

Umm…this might be a little awkward for Spielberg, but did he steal the Crystal Skull refrigerator/explosion bit from this movie? ‘Cause I’m here to tell ya that Mosquito did it first, baby!

“If I wasn’t having such a shitty day, I’d kill ya right now.”

Pure monster bug, b-movie bliss! Gotta say, I did NOT peg a spaceship zooming through space as the opening shot.

The acting is hit-or-miss (mostly miss), the production values are low, and the plot doesn’t quite add up, but Gary Jones’ feature debut is outrageous fun from start to finish. What it lacks in budget, the cast and crew make up for in goofy, infectious humor, gnarly effects (a dude’s eyes explode) and expert pacing. The giant mosquitos themselves look great (like the previous year’s Ticks, the filmmakers obviously were pleased with the end result and use them frequently). The stop-motion is pretty solid and although the super-imposed flying scenes are hilariously poor, this is an ooey gooey cheesy good time!
