The battle sequences are dazzling, although the story is old hat. Young girl goes on a quest, obstacles, allies, enemies, prophecy, yada, yada, yada… Setting the tale amongst a Mesoamerican culture adds a welcome level of color and freshness.It takes a few detours, introduces amusing characters, and the conclusion is faintly moving.
One major gripe is the character designs of Maya and her eventual love interest. Maya is tough, spunky, and especially diminutive, so when she meets Zatz; a tall, suave, enigmatic warrior, it’s off-putting when he starts to put the moves on her. They make a point to mention she’s 15 and a flashback implies that Zatz is maybe a year older at most, but it comes off as creepy, underage dating.
