Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Thoughtful and very sweet, this was my third viewing of master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s tale of a witch and her transition into young adulthood; this time on the big screen at my local Alamo Drafthouse.

It’s never been a big favorite of mine. I’ve always found it nice, but not enthralling. This time around, it grew on me, although Kiki’s extended bout of ennui and uncertainty does drag the film down, despite this obviously being an intentional move.

What worked so well in My Neighbor Totoro (the lack of a villain and/or conflict) does a minor disservice to Kiki’s Delivery Service, whose premise alone could easily inspire a tv series on a much larger scale.
