It's got that 90's gloss, know what I mean? Reminded me of the previous year's Trespass, where the environs are supposed to be dingy and grubby, but since the movies are shot on 35mm stock with excellent equipment, the dank feels manufactured and slick. A blindspot for me in the filmography of Stephen Hopkins, a filmmaker whose career has been a roller coaster ride, to say the least.
Judgment Night was his follow-up after the tepidly-received Predator 2 failed to successfully continue the would-be sci-fi/horror franchise. This one feels like a make-up effort because it's extremely well-made and directed. The fluid camera movement and expertly-staged suspense set pieces mostly transcend an average script along with some fine but unmemorable performances, save for Jeremy Piven, who manages to bring a skeezy energy to his wannabe business shark.
