Scariest Hatchimal Movie Ever!I'm a sucker for horror mixed with the fantastical and this plays like a super twisted fairy tale. It's agonizing to watch this sweet, kindhearted child be manipulated and dominated by an overbearing, self-absorbed mother. The last 20 minutes do NOT play out as you'd expect.
On a very low level, Hatching suffers from what Ebert referred to as "The Idiot Plot." Whether this was due to genuine flaws in the screenplay or more likely because director/co-writer Hanna Bergholm wanted to keep her darkly comic vision under 90 minutes is tough to say. I hate when ancillary characters experience something emotionally jarring but basically have to ignore or simply keep silent about it, otherwise the plot would unravel and the film would stop dead. Not a huge problem, but it stretches logic.
That minor quibble aside, this is a nasty treat anchored by two great acting turns from Sophia Heikkila and especially young Siiri Solalinna who, once you realize what's really going on, is astonishing.
