Goodbye Uncle Tom

nickkarner

“He almost forgot the baby.”

Dude. You could’ve made that fake baby’s skin a little less grey before bashing it against the wall.

Since GUT turned 50 a while back, I felt like revisiting, but since I’d only seen the domestic version, I managed to track down the international cut. I’d heard they were different, but whoa! I wasn’t prepared for how different.

Still just as overwhelming and nightmarish today, I’ve always been struck by the scale of the production, no doubt aided by the Haitian government supplying an endless number of extras for pennies a day. Those long dolly and helicopter shots lend such grandeur. I appreciate the domestic cut for how it just drops us into that era without a respite, but the international cut is equally impressive and comes closest to the message that Jacopetti and Prosperi were purporting to convey.
