The tale of a weak, repressed man put in a nightmarish, impossible situation by manipulative, sociopathic lunatics. Some refer to Sion Sono's lengthy but often spellbinding yarn as an entry into the serial killer canon, but it's much more of a horror-tinged psychological thriller with moments of extreme gore. Ever wonder how exactly murderers dispose of bodies? Welp, we get the play-by-play in all its bloody, messy detail.
The acting is stellar, most notably the efforts of Denden, who rightfully won a Japanese Academy Award for his astonishing turn as a depraved, gleeful monster. Many scenes play out in masterful single takes, including a stunning, hypnotic seduction scene where Denden realistically manages to entice a married woman.
The true joy and watchability factor comes from knowing that any moment, our "hero" is going to blow his top, and when that happens, he is going to ANNIHILATE these bastards.
