This one snuck up on me. 100% a crowd pleaser and a conventional plot to boot. I’m not immune to crowd-pleasing movies, mind you, but there’s a fine line between emotionally resonant material and blatant manipulation.
Fortunately for Coda, there’s a hard edge to Sian Heder’s screenplay, even with a number of scenes that leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling.
Aside from some hilariously profane dialogue (both spoken and signed) and a couple broad characterizations/clichés, what distinguishes Coda and what took my breath away were the harsh truths spoken between characters, even ones whom love each other. It’s the brutal honesty and barely suppressed anger and frustration that create a deeper impression than mere applause-worthy, eye-dabbing sequences.
