Candyman (2021)

So many things to like here; chief among them, the imagery and the conceptualization of the shadow puppets. This is also an expertly-handled sequel/reboot which is deeply respectful and downright indebted to the 1992 original.

It’s a very good sequel but only an OK movie. It fails to conjure the atmosphere of dread Bernard Rose’s film managed to create even in daytime scenes. While the depiction and dissection of art and an artist’s surroundings was amusing and even vaguely satirical, the story is heavy-handed, some kills (especially the college-bound kids) are extraneous and merely there to rack up the death count, and even a much-welcome cameo at the end can’t hide the fact that the protagonists aren’t particularly dynamic or memorable.
