“Put some bean paste on it.”
Within the context of this brutal, supremely nasty debut feature by Cheo-soo Jang, that’s straight-up gallows humor.
Before our second lead gets pushed too far and becomes Jason Voorhees with a sickle (and later a sledgehammer which crushes a dude’s nutsack), the abuse and cruelty raining down upon her veers dangerously close to overkill.
Depending on your perspective, this is either a depiction of mental and physical trauma with the subtlety of a wrecking ball or a stark reminder of the savagery and marginalization of women and the horrible people who get off on inflicting those inhumanities.
Either way, it’s absolutely delicious when these horrible people get what they deserve and what was up until that point a drama switches gears into full-blown horror movie mode.
